I’ve got you, māmā!

  • A doula is a non-medically trained emotional and physical support person for you and your partner throughout your pregnancy, during childbirth, and in the postpartum period.

The term ‘doula’ originates from Greek, meaning ‘woman’s servant.’ For centuries, women have supported each other in the sacred process of childbirth, reflecting the strong tradition of whānau (family) support in Māori culture. In this spirit, a doula embodies the role of ‘mothering the mother,’ ensuring that you feel nurtured and empowered during this transformative time.

  • You can hire a doula at any stage of your pregnancy journey!

Whether you're newly pregnant, in your second trimester, or nearing your due date, I'm here to support you. Many families choose to engage a doula early in their pregnancy to receive guidance and education throughout the process. However, if you're further along and feel you could benefit from additional support, don’t hesitate to reach out!

  • Did you know that in 2022, 96.7% of mothers in New South Wales gave birth in a hospital? With only 1.9% birthing in a birth center and a mere 0.2% at home, it’s clear that most families are navigating hospital policies that often limit the support they can bring to their birth (AIHW, 2023).

At Te Whānau Doula, I blend modern support with the wisdom of Māori birthing traditions, ensuring you have guidance tailored to your birth. Whether you’re preparing for a home birth or embracing the hospital environment, I’m here to guide you.

It’s all about you: informed, empowered, and choosing what’s best for your journey!

  • Midwives handle medical care and are often bound by hospital policy, while doulas focus on non-medical support, bringing emotional and physical comfort to the birth space. Together, a doula and midwife can make an amazing team, balancing expert medical care with compassionate, personalised support to create a village around you for the birth.

  • A doula does NOT replace your partner; instead, we enhance your birth experience together!

Your partner knows you intimately and provides emotional support in ways that resonate deeply with you. Meanwhile, I bring a wealth of knowledge about birth, hospital policies, and comfort techniques to guide you through the process. Think of us as your dynamic duo: your partner offers heartfelt encouragement, while I provide evidence-based insights and practical support, ensuring you feel informed and empowered every step of the way.

Together, we create a supportive environment where you can thrive!
